STOCKTON WELCOMES 1,000 PUPILS FOR FUN RUN WITH WORLD CHAMPION ATHLETE

PRESTON Park saw over 1,000 primary school children come together to participate in an event organised by the running initiative GO Run For Fun on Thursday 12 July 2018.

Teesside born Richard Kilty, a British sprinter who is world champion and two times European champion in his field, joined the event as a special guest, and kicked off the race by taking part in an open Q&A session and sounding the race claxon.

The 28-year-old athlete, who won a gold medal at the commonwealth games this year for the 4x100m relay, said: “Being able to support young people in the Stockton area through sport, health and fitness is what attracted me to being at the GO Run For Fun event.

“The best advice I can offer to young adults struggling to find a sport they enjoy is not to be afraid of trying lots of different sports until you find one which you enjoy and are good at. It will make you a better athlete in the future.

“I have been lucky enough to be successful in my running career which has allowed me to support my family and friends. It’s important to set a goal and keep working towards that goal, but not be afraid to adjust it.”

The event was partnered with Stockton Council who helped arrange the location and facilities on the day.

Councillor Norma Wilburn, Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Arts, Leisure and Culture, said: “It’s fantastic to see so many of our primary school children having great fun and getting active in what is a marvellous setting at Preston Park Museum and Grounds. I hope their experience here today, and seeing our champion sprinter Richard Kilty, has inspired a lot of the children to take part in either the Simplyhealth Mini or Junior Great Tees Run in September, so fingers crossed we’ll see them lace up their running shoes again soon!”

Since its launch in 2013, the GO Run For Fun initiative, which is part of The Great Run series, has seen in excess of 260,000 participants taking part, and aims to get 280,000 children running by the end of 2018.

The programme is supported by INEOS, a multinational company headquartered in London, with health and fitness at the heart of its ethos.

INEOS Chairman, Jim Ratcliffe, is deeply passionate about running. He said: “It has never been more important to support young people in leading healthier, more active lives.

“GO Run for Fun and The Daily Mile have been making a positive impact on the health and well-being of hundreds of thousands of children in the UK and beyond for the last four years. We are very proud to support these two initiatives and everyone who runs in them.”

GO Run For Fun organises free running events across the world to inspire children to be more active. To find out more about GO Run For Fun, visit www.thedailymileevents.com or stay up to date on Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram.
