GB ATHLETIC TWIN CHAMPIONS SUPPORT 1400 CHILDREN IN RUNNING EVENT

GREAT British athletes, Laviai and Lina Nielsen, backed over 1,400 primary school children who took part in free running events across Suffolk, organised by running initiative GO Run For Fun.

The 400-metre sprinter and 400-metre hurdler attended one event each as ambassadors for the popular occasion, which works in partnership with the Great Run series.

795 primary school children from eight schools, aged between five and ten years old, took part in the first of the two events in Bury St Edmunds on Wednesday 23 May, with the second event in Ipswich on Thursday 24 May welcoming 642 participants from 15 schools.

The professional hurdler, Lina Nielsen, said: “The best bit of the event was the mass warm up! Everyone was having so much fun dancing around, which is a great way to relax ahead of the big run.”

When asked what advice she’d give to children to help keep them active, Lina said, “Try every different sport and activity you can until you find a sport that fits with you. Laviai and I started running in primary school through sports days, fun runs and district cross country races, and just fell in love with the thrill at that age. We only turned professional when we were 18 however, which is when we started to take running seriously.”

Laviai added, “It’s important to find something that you love, and find good people to do it with. It’s taught me so much about courage, perseverance and determination, which runs over into many aspects of my life.”

GO Run For Fun is part of the Great Run series, which has seen 230,000 runners taking part so far, and aims to get another 55,000 children running by the end of 2018. Through organising a total of 25 mass running events across the UK, the initiative hopes to excel this target.

The programme is supported by INEOS, a multinational company headquartered in London, with health and fitness at the heart of its ethos.

INEOS Chairman, Jim Ratcliffe, who is deeply passionate about running, said: “It has never been more important to support young people in leading healthier, more active lives. We are very proud to support and celebrate these two initiatives (GO Run For Fun and The Daily Mile) that have been making a positive impact on the health and wellbeing of hundreds of thousands of children in the UK and beyond, for the last four years.”

GO Run For Fun organises free running events across the world to inspire children to be more active. To find out more about GO Run For Fun, visit www.thedailymileevents.com or stay up to date on Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram.
